Hemp Milk: The dairy alternative

by Gabrielle Caravetta

The emergence of dairy-free milk products in the last five years continues to gain it’s popularity as manufacturers continue to produce a variety of different products like almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, and oat milk.  These products are taking over the shelves in our grocery stores!

Hemp milk’s health benefits are extensive. These milk alternatives make it possible for those who are lactose intolerant  to still enjoy a cup of coffee or a bowl of cereal without the unbearable after-effects of dairy. Someone with lactose intolerance is unable to tolerate dairy products and cannot consume them without becoming very sick. Hemp milk accommodates people who are dairy-free and those who suffer from tree nut allergies.

Hemp milk is made by blending water and seeds picked from the cannabis plant. It is enriched with healthy fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals which explains it’s earthy, nutty flavor, and creamy consistency. In comparison to cow’s milk, it has fewer calories and carbohydrates. Hemp milk stands out from the other milk alternatives, too. It has more protein, healthy fats, and essential amino acids that we can only get from consuming the right foods (omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids). Other milk substitutes are not a source for this essential nutrition. In addition, it provides consumers with large doses of Vitamin A, Calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Iron, Phosphorus, and Zinc, all of which contribute to energy levels, biological functioning, and brain capacity.
