Medical clinics in North Dakota are steadily expanding the horizons of the demographic to which their services provide and aid in medical care. According to U.S. News, throughout the region of Minot city in ND, an increasing number of independently-operated clinics are extending a larger variety of healthcare-related services of patient treatment (Schramm, 2021, para. 1).

The need for independence, paired with the subsequent desire to curate care best-suited for their patients’ needs, for a range of clinics run by mid-level medical care providers has prolonged within the recent years. The prompt to respond to this urge for improving healthcare is backed by the openly-noted observation by private nurse practitioners, commenting on the “lack of health clinics that really took the time to listen and understand their patients”, as quoted directly by Legacy Health Clinic nurse practitioner and owner Cim Berg-Hooker (Schramm, para. 2). Resultantly, the new program in Minot was opened in August of 2021. The services provided by the practice includes the first state-practice offering IV therapy-which aims to treat hydration through the intravenous delivery of nutritional products, as well as one of the few independent clinics to specialize in the eligibility-based prescription of medical marijuana. These two factors are what attract patients from out of the state to Legacy Health, along with the personable and friendly atmosphere of the place, as also quoted by Berg-Hooker (Schramm).

Legacy Health Clinic is expanding its area of services to help serve women’s mental health and mental health, as continued by Berg-Hooker (Schramm). As said by Legacy Health Clinic, not only is the clinic known for providing family and primary care, but also offers various services specializing in medical marijuana treatment, dermatology, mental health, women’s health, as well as pediatrics (2021, “Unique Specialties”). While medical cannabis has been used to provide treatment toward clinical health conditions, research has recently been focused on the effects of cannabidiol to treat such illnesses, according to ADF (‘Medical Cannabis and mental illness’, 2019, para. 2). The use of such non-psychoactive cannabinoid as medical treatment can be traced back to the year of 2800 BC, during the reign of Emperor Shen Nung in China.

Throughout history, it was found that during ancient times, cannabinoid in the cannabis plant was further used to treat forms of chronic illnesses, as well as relieve pain, such as constipation and has also been used post-surgery. Research conducted by experts into cannabis used for therapeutic purposes has been on-going since the 1970’s and it has been found that cannabis can potentially replicate the effects of antidepressant and antipsychotic medicinal products-a possibly ground-breaking advantage for the psychiatric field of treatment. (“Therapeutic use of cannabidiol [CBD]”).
