Since the Orlando restart, the NBA will continue to suspend random marijuana drug testing for the 2021-2022 season. The league first suspended drug testing altogether in March 2020 in response to the early days of COVID-19, then agreed with players to test for performance-enhancers in the bubble at Walt Disney World that summer.
“We have agreed with the NBPA (National Basketball Players Association) to extend the suspension of random testing for marijuana for the 2021-22 season and focus our random testing program on performance-enhancing products and drugs of abuse,” stated by NBA spokesman Mike Bass.
This agreement was revealed to the players in a memo from the union, testing for marijuana puts players at unnecessary risk of contracting COVID-19.
